The creation of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) marked a unique aspect
of African American history. NCNW was the first national coalition of black women’s organizations. Through the early work of Mary McLeod Bethune, and with the support of like-minded organizations, NCNW worked tirelessly to promote its agenda of uniting and educating women on the effective participation in civic, political, and economic activities.

Known as the major advocate for black women, NCNW served as a unifying force – forming a power block determined to focus on key social and political issues, and influence legislative decisions that directly impacted black women and their families.

Its humble beginnings held great promise of coalition building and collaboration. Working together, with a unity of purpose and action, NCNW has used its collective strength to create an effective and influential movement. And NCNW continues to play a powerful role in the lives of black women worldwide.
